University of Bombay is one of India's first modern universities. It was established by the British in 1857. Originally, an affiliating and degree-granting body, the university later added teaching to its functions. With the establishment of regional universities in the state in 1948-50, it was designated a federal university, with jurisdiction over numerous colleges and postgraduate institutions in the metropolitan area of Greater Mumbai. The university has faculties of arts, science, technology, law, medicine, commerce, dentistry, fine arts, and Indian medicine. In the late 20th century it had about 222,700 full-time students. The primary language of instruction is English.
